This year’s T20 World Cup was to be held in India. But the Corona situation became such that the ICC was finally forced to move the World Cup to the United Arab Emirates. Despite having the right to organize, the financial loss to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is substantial. To make up for this loss, India wants to win almost all ICC competitions in the future. According to him, the BCCI has also started taking necessary preparations.
Outbreaks of coronavirus in India have been on the rise since last March-April. There were also much higher mortality rates due to the Delta variant. That is why the IPL, which started in April, was postponed in the first week of May. Because of Corona, even the foreign cricketers in the IPL did not think India was safe anymore. The ICC is also worried about hosting the T20 World Cup in India after the IPL was postponed. Last June, the event was moved to the United Arab Emirates and Oman, leaving the rights in the hands of India. The T20 World Cup will start on October 16 in the UAE and Oman. The final of the 16-team competition is on November 14.
Now the move is leaving India with a financial loss. Thoughts have started on how much it can be compensated. The BCCI wants to persuade the ICC to host at least three ICC tournaments (ODI World Cup, Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup) in India after 2023. India is also the host of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
A BCCI official told an English daily in India: “We are thinking of hosting more ICC tournaments in India after the 2023 ODI World Cup. Preparations are also being made to submit a proposal to the ICC for that purpose. We are hopeful that in the future we will be able to bring more than one ICC tournament to India.
India was the co-host of the 2011 ODI World Cup. The other two organizers were Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. India was the sole host of the last T20 World Cup in 2016. Earlier, India was the joint organizer of the ODI World Cup in 1996 and 1986. In ’96, India hosted the World Cup with Pakistan and Sri Lanka. However, only Pakistan was India’s ally in ‘8.
