The fish market was not allowed to sit on three sides of Uchaliapara Government Primary School in Sarail Upazila Sadar of Brahmanbaria. According to the locals, 50-60 fish traders have been selling fish in the classrooms on the east, north and south sides of the school for several years. Students, teachers and parents were impatient with the stench of dirty fish water and garbage. A report on the subject was published in Prothom Alo last Friday under the headline ‘Fish market on three sides of the school’.
According to the school authorities, the police of Sarail police station went to the market on Friday night and instructed some traders not to set up a market in the vicinity of the school from Saturday. But even then the fish traders started sitting next to the school yesterday morning. At around 6.30 am, Kamal Uddin, president of Uchaliapara Young Star Club, Mahbub Khan, president of Mitali Social Welfare Association, Faisal Ahmed, president of Hridaye Sarail and Ahsan Ullah, vice-president of the school management committee were present in the market. They removed the fish traders from the side of the school.
Headmaster Shamsun Nahar Sultana Haque said, ‘We got rid of a big problem. Today we have sprayed disinfectants on three sides of the school.
Sarail Police Station OC Aslam Hossain said they were trying to evict the temporary market from some important places.
UNO Ariful Haque said regular monitoring would be carried out so that the market could not sit here again.
