The word maglev comes from the two words magnetic and levitation. In this technology, the train is propelled by electromagnetic energy in an almost floating state. At this time there is not even a slight connection between the train and the railway. China has been using this technology on a very small scale for almost two decades.
If China’s maglev train runs at maximum power, its speed will surpass that of any other vehicle in the world. If the train travels at a speed of 600 km, it will take only two and a half hours to reach Shanghai from Beijing, the capital of China. The train has to travel more than one thousand kilometers between the two cities. It takes three hours to travel by plane from Beijing to Shanghai. The other high-speed train takes five and a half hours.
However, China has not yet been able to build a structure suitable for running maglev trains. There is no maglev line connection between the cities or provinces of the country. There is only a maglev line from Shanghai to the airport. Research has begun on setting up the line in several cities, including Shanghai and Chengdu.
Apart from China, several countries including Japan and Germany want to launch maglev trains. However, the huge cost of building this railway system and the condition of the existing railway lines of the countries are becoming an obstacle in these development projects.
