Kyler Oliver would have loved to have been a member of the USA Eagles team for last weekend’s PBR Global Cup USA, presented by Monster Energy.
Still, the reality is that a weekend off may have been the elegant way to help the No. 3-ranked bull rider back on track as he attempts to stage his first event with multiple good lifts since late January ( Sacramento, Calif.).
I went to The American, and my first score didn’t get me into the next one, so I went home and took care of my son and other things at home, Oliver said. I took some time off and spent some family time. That was good. I demanded that. I guess she does too.
A rejuvenated Oliver finished Round 1 of the PBRU.S. Border Patrol Invitational on Saturday night in third place after an 88.75-point climb into Budakon at Gila River Arena.
GLENDALE, Arizona. – Kyler Oliver would have loved to have been a member of the USA Eagles team for last weekend’s PBR Global Cup USA, presented by Monster Energy.

It was good, Oliver said. I jumped, and he turned around, and I was in the middle, where I wanted to be. In the middle of the elevator, he slowed down a bit and I had to turn around a bit. And he almost dropped me in that pit, but I grabbed a really deep yank with my right leg and came back forward, and he exploded and went back into me. It was OK.
Sunday is an occasion for Oliver to help himself in the world title race as the two best riders in the world: Daylon Swearingen (4.7sec Off Lot) and Joao Ricardo Vieira (2.71sec Hell Storm) meet they met in Round 1. Reigning was two-time world champion José Vitor Leme, the world’s No. 4 bull rider, also bucking (4.62 seconds over Yadi).
Only two other riders inside the Top 10 of the world rankings registered one of the 11 good lifts in Round 1. No 7 Eli Vastbinder rode Speed Demon for 82 points, and No. 8 Luciano de Castro took over Tarabull for 86 points.
Oliver is only 127.16 points behind Swearingen.
The bull rider from Roy, Utah has been battling troubling injuries to both groins, but especially his right groin. He could rest for more than a week once he failed to qualify for The American Contender round in Fort Worth, Texas.
However, Oliver doesn’t anticipate them being a problem, even for his Round 2 tournament against Juju (5-4, UTB) on Sunday (5 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network).
