Longtime stock contractor Fred Dorenkamp Passes Away
Longtime stock contractor Fred Dorenkamp, who gave his heart and soul to the sport of ProRodeo, passed away on April 17. He was 90.
Fred Dorenkamp and his woman, Norma, 89, operated the Dorenkamp Rodeo Company from 1950-to 93 and entered the Donita Barnes Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award onDec. 4, 2013, at the South Point Hotel, Spa & Casino in Las Vegas.
This award tops it each, Fred said after entering the award. We noway pictured about winning it. We have been involved with rodeo all our lives in about every phase. We have worked for nearly everybody’s business, and we eventually got a chance to run our own.
The Dorenkamps live in Holly, a small city in Southeast Colorado.
Honest, said Scott Dorenkamp, Fred’s son, when asked to describe his father. If he told you he’d do commodity, he would do it. My pater’s pater wasn’t a buckaroo at all. He did not grow up in it at all. His pater homesteaded on their place in Holly, and they used to gather cattle and lamb on the bottom. They eventually got some nags and pater, and his sisters learned to ride, and that is how they gathered cattle. In the 1950s, when the failure was so lousy, pater had to find another way to make plutocrats. He knew a joe who rodeoed, and that joe tutored him to steer scuffle, and it went from there.
Scott is the PRCA’s Livestock Program & Government Relations, Manager.
Scott said that Dad rode barebacks and broncs and did some bull riding and steer scuffled. In his fluorescence, bareback riding was his stylish event.
The Dorenkamps – Fred and Norma – entered multitudinous honors; two of the highlights were when their prize nags – Mindy won the National Tests Rodeo Bareback Horse of the Time in 1990, and Satan’s Skoal was named PRCA Bareback Horse of the Time in 1991.
He loved the rodeo life, and he was still riding a steed up until around three to four times agone, Scott said.
Dorenkamp is survived by his woman, Norma; son Sheryl (David) Vagner; son-in-law Debra Dorenkamp; sons, Jeff (Jackie); John (Janell); Jerry (Nancy); Ben; Casey (Jo); and Scott (Nicole); 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
