Champions Crowned At Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping

December 1, 2022 by SportDown

The third annual Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping Presented by Teton Ridge came to a close Wednesday with some fast-paced emotional action.

Taylor Munsell, the 2019 collegiate champion from Alva, Okla., set the pace in round six in 2.1 seconds for her second win in the 10-head competition. Munsell also tied with J.J. Hampton for the victory in round 10. It was the first time in 2022 that Hampton managed to do the victory lap, but the victory in the final third round went to the veteran roper from Stephenville, a resident of Texas. He also won round 10 in 2020 and 2021.

Round seven saw Joey Williams break the 2.0-second mark. Williams, of Volborg, Montana, stopped the clock in 1.9 seconds for the win. Round eight was even faster as world-ranking leader Martha Angelone was victorious at 1.8. That added $5,080 to her impressive earnings and put her stamp on her 2022 world championship. It also earned her the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame’s Betty Gayle Copper Fast Time Award. She finished the season with $130,303 and won her first world title.

“This is unbelievable,” Angelone said. “I left Virginia with nothing. When they started adding breaking ropes to professional rodeos, I set a goal to go to as many as I could, win as much as I could, and get a world title.”

Cadee Williams of Weatherford, Texas won the event’s championship by lassoing 10 calves in 31.9 seconds for the second most prestigious title in rodeo. Williams grew up in Montana as Cadee Tew, married a Texan, and now she and her family spend summers in Montana and compete in rodeos there.

“We all knew that Martha was going to win it (the world title), so going for average was the next goal,” Williams said. “My mare is only seven years old, so this was a real test. We do this as a family, so it’s a win for the whole family.”

The big-money winner at South Point Arena was Cheyanne Guillory, of Kingston, Oklahoma, who raised $27,037.

Garrett Smith Climbs Inside Top 15

Garrett Smith Climbs Inside Top 15: PRCA Standings Shuffle

Garrett Smith has competed in the most critical stage of the rodeo. He qualified for three Wrangler National Finals Rodeos (2016, 2017, and 2019) but has struggled to stay healthy.

His most recent injury occurred in July of last year when we broke his right foot. The injury required surgery, and he effectively ended his season. The failure did not prevent him from returning to the bulls in 2022.

Smith has been on a roll on the ProRodeo circuit for the past week. He won the bull riding title at the Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer Days Rodeo in two days, but also finished second at the Cactus Jack Xtreme Bull Riding in Uvalde, Texas.

Those two days of work paid him $14,589, propelling him from 25th to 13th in the most current PRCA | RAM world ranking. He attributes his recent success to the animals he has had the opportunity to jump on board.

He explained that drawing good bulls has been the source of much of Smith’s success in recent weeks. I stayed optimistic and handled things one bull at a time. Everything worked out in the end.

At Guymon, he won with a 91-point run in the Frontier Rodeo’s Gladiator’s Hammer. It was a rematch of last year when Smith was not so lucky.

He commented that that bull felt great and that I was looking forward to the rematch. Last year in San Antonio, I slipped on him at the 7.8-second mark. So I knew he was happy, and I knew he was resisting. I was glad that he rode and won this time.

Smith’s goal for the summer race is to return to the Finals, but he realizes he has too much rodeo left. So he takes it one bull at a time.

He added that you couldn’t overthink anything; you have to follow one by one. It’s too early to start looking at the rankings. Like I’ve always said, the season doesn’t change until.

Brody Cress wins Battle of the Best in Coarsegold, California

May 9, 2022 by SportDown

You know you’re having a great run when you can draw a decent badass animal at any regular season rodeo and be like, “Oh yeah, I remember.” At the National Finals Rodeo, I rode it.

Brody Cress, a saddle bronc jockey, was competing in the Battle of the Best in Coarsegold, Calif., on Sunday. The saddle bronc jockeys were divided into six groups of four, with the winner of each group progressing to a six-man sprint.

Despite scoring just 78.5 points at the Four Star Rodeo’s Dakota Star, Cress advanced.

He is a talented young man, but Cress believes that he is still unpredictable. Fortunately, all six of us were riding tough horses, so my score was good enough.
Even better, Cress was given a far superior draw for the short run: Bar T Rodeo’s Hell Boy.

That is one of their most talented horses of his. Cress said, “I actually outclassed him at the 2020 NFR. He did more than just take his case. Cress finished second in Round 7 of the 2020 Wrangler NFR with an 88.5, earning over $21,000.”

At the Battle of the Best, Cress was ready to ride Hell Boy again. He is a horse that always offers pleasant rides. Cress said, “I just thought it was a really good opportunity, especially in a six-man short round.” On paper, having a horse like this promises a lot.

However, there is the paper part and then there is the driving part.

I knew all I had to do was the focus and I would have a shot at winning, Cress said, noting that it wasn’t like his journey at NFR in 2020. He had a slightly different journey. He got a bit heavier as the game progressed. However, I was able to finish strong and make everything go well.

In fact, Cress tied his 2020 Hell Boy score with an 88.5-point ride to win and continue his terrific start to the season. Cress is now fourth in the PRCA | RAM world ranking with nearly $60,000 in Wrangler NFR qualifying earnings. He has qualified for five straight NFRs and won three average NFR titles, including the 2021 edition.

As summer approaches, Cress hopes to keep up the pace.

Cress, who is originally from Hillsdale, Wyoming, but now resides in Weatherford, Texas, said, “I’ve had the privilege of bringing in some good horses at rodeos with a lot of good pay.” I only care about the things I can influence, and the rest will take care of itself. So far, this year has been a success. Hopefully, we can keep the ball rolling.

Myron Duarte Still Riding Bulls in the PRCA at 54

May 6, 2022 by SportDown

Ageless Wonder: Myron Duarte Still Riding Bulls in the PRCA at 54 | News

A challenge and a lot of bravery to back it up got Myron Duarte into a career in the rodeo business in days gone by.

The same station has him back in the arena after eight retirements.

I did it for a dare; Duarte laughs when asked how he got interested in riding bulls when he was young, growing up in Hawaii. My relative rode bulls. I used to make fun of him for riding his slicing machine. I said that thing is like a merry-go-round.

His relative, tired of making jokes, finally did Duarte climb on himself, allowing him to shut up if he had to put up.
The plan took a spectacular turn when Duarte steered the machine smoothly. It was the launch of Duarte’s rodeo career, and he worked to get better by watching videos and participating in actual events and youth rodeos.

He said, ” that’s how it started, and I had to go back. I told them it’s not that hard!
Duarte eventually made it to the landmass, first for the council rodeo and later to embark on a professional bull-riding career.

Before retiring in 2013, Duarte had made eight Wrangler National Tests Rodeo appearances, winning a reserve world title in 2002, just behind PRCA world champion BlueStone. In his long career, Duarte has earned $8,792 and counting.

At the young age of 54, Duarte decided to return to the arena in the fall of 2021, participating in his first ProRodeo eight times. It’s like when I started, he joked about the kids’ horse riding time. I said that riding bulls is not that difficult.

Duarte has been busy lately with Duarte Trucking, LLC, a beast-hauling business that keeps him on the road as long as he used to. Since he also hauls rodeo beasts, he was taking his chances at many of the California rodeos.

I figured since he was there anyway, he might as well come in, he said. Without any practice, he jumped into cold lemon in Bakersfield, California. in October. Not only did he ride his first bull, a bull named Bamboozled, in time, but he also won the rodeo and $1,053,845, enough to put him sixth in the current California Circuit standings and knocking on the door to another circuit test. The rodeo rating.

Rodeo News: Bronze Bust of ProRodeo Hall of Famer Hadley Barrett Unveiled

A citation bust of North Platte, Nebraska native and ProRodeo Hall of Fame host Hadley Barrett was unveiled on April 30 at the Wild West Arena in North Platte.

The bust will greet rodeo fans as they enter the grandstands at the Wild West Arena. Barrett starred in some of the biggest ProRodeos across the country, including the National Trials Rodeo four times and as the television host of the Trials 22 times. On March 2, 2017, Barrett passed away at the age of 87, less than a week after announcing the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.

Barrett started her son-in-law, Randy Corley, in the rodeo advertising business in North Platte. The two advertised several rodeos, including the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, which Barrett started in 1965, and Corley in 1980.

Hadley took me under his cult, Corley said. He has not tried to tell me how to announce a rodeo, but he told me the lanes. He was one of the best instructors a person could have. He was so good. There’s no rodeo that he and I worked on together. What a time I have a real void in my heart for who Hadley Barrett was.

The sculptor in Barrett’s citation is Jake Hebbert, born and raised in the Sandhills of Nebraska, near Hyannis.
Buffalo Bill Rodeo will be June 15-18 at the Wild West Arena in North Platte, Nebraska. Performances start at 8 p.m. (CT) nocturnal. Tickets are on sale at NebraskalandDays.com and range from $10 to $23.

For more information, visit the website or call the office at 308.532.7939.

Ora Taton Cashes in at Ron Ross Memorial Steer Roping | Latest News

May 3, 2022 by SportDown

Ora Taton, a veteran roper, had never competed in the Ron Ross Memorial Steer Roping before.

Her first performance in Liberty Hill, Texas, on May 14 and 15, was very remarkable.

The cowboy from Rapid City, South Dakota won the average with a time of 69.2 seconds over five heads.

Taton took home $9,042 in prize money, including $6,239 for winning the average.

It was one of those completely unexpected offers, added Taton, 52. It was unexpected to travel from South Dakota to Texas and win something like that against the guys she was fighting. She had never been there before, and she had already made some money in rodeos this season, and this is one of the main ones we can go to. My wife and I have decided to visit, and want to stay a few days between this (May 14-15) and the next at Liberty Hill (May 19-21).

Taton rose to fifth place in the world rankings due to her strong financial performance at Liberty Hill. She qualified for the National Steer Roping Finals twice, in 2003 and 2004, and won the average in 2003, finishing sixth in the world rankings.

Taton was ranked 20th in the PRCA | RAM world ranking in 2020.

It’s been a long time since I’ve visited (the NFSR), Taton said. I would like to go back there (the NFSR). However, she rarely traveled long distances. I often tell people that if I don’t have money to travel, I won’t. I can’t play unless I win something. This year has been unusual in that I made some money on independent roping in Andrews, Texas early on and was able to go, and have been making money elsewhere. So this year has been a bit strange because I don’t normally make that much money this early in the year.

At Liberty Hill, Taton was riding Spur, her horse.

I guess he’s about 10 years old and he’s the only horse I have right now, Taton said of the horse, which he rode to victory at the Steer Roping National Circuit Finals in Torrington, Wyoming, in 2020. He was about 5 years old. when I buy it. He needed one and he seemed to be able to make one, so my dad (Ralph) and I started him up, and he turned out to be one that we enjoyed. He is one of those exceptional horses.

Taton isn’t sure he’ll make an effort to make it to the NFSR in 2022, despite his strong position in the world rankings.

Everyone tells you to move on when you make money, but I’ve never done that, Taton said. I seem to keep winning, and everyone tells me to move on, but I’m not going to burn down a team by traveling all over the place and disappearing; I just can’t do it. I go to a few others that I don’t usually go to, like Pecos, Texas, and then there’s the 4th of July race, and there are several other ties closer to home (in Rapid City). But I’m not going to set the road on fire.

I’m going, and I’m going to have a good time and be prepared.

Tanner Aus Moves Inside Top 5 | PRCA Standings Shuffle

May 3, 2022 by SportDown

During his 14-year ProRodeo career, Tanner Aus has qualified for six Wrangler Rodeos National Finals. The bareback cyclist from Granite Falls, Minnesota is on track to book another trip to Las Vegas in 2022.

This week, Australia was one of the most active teams in qualifying. In the most recent PRCA | RAM World Standings, climbed from ninth to fifth.

Two rodeo wins at The End of the Trail Western Festival in Ogallala, Neb., and The Daily Record Xtreme Bares and Broncs in Ellensburg, Wash., contributed significantly to the increase. For his 16 seconds of work over the weekend, he was paid $7,442.

I’ve only been going to one or two events a weekend, drawing well and figuring out how to take advantage of my opportunities, the 31-year-old Aus said. It was a great winter and so far it’s been a great spring.

Aus rode Kirsten Vold’s Painted Playgirl Rodeo to a 90-point race at Nebraska, his highest-scoring race of the season. The trip to the Cornhusker Estate, he commented, could not have gone better.

He explained, that he knew he was a fantastic horse and that he would have a decent chance of making some money. It was fantastic. That horse bolted and was electrifying down the front of the slides to the left.

I welcomed the opportunity and then one of my fellow passengers, Ty Breuer, came in second with 88.5 points. As a result, we went down to take care of business. It was a fantastic little meeting.

Any cowboy with NFR hopes will need to be consistent down the stretch. Aus understands that the ups and downs are part of the game.

All you can do is ride the ups and downs, he added. Just take it to the next one and expect to keep fleecing horses along the way. That’s how the rodeo works. Streaks never last, no matter how long or short they are. As a result, you need to persevere, play average, and be as consistent as possible.

The other cowboys who made it to the PRCA Top 15 | RAM world rankings are listed below.

Sage Newman Takes Home The Fallon County Xtreme Broncs Title

May 3, 2022 by SportDown

Sage Newman is from Montana, and her home-cooked meal was paid off on May 27 for the Melstone Bronc rider.

Newman put in two outstanding runs in less than an hour to win the Fallon County Xtreme Broncs title. He shared the title with Lefty Holman at the MSU-Northern PRCA Extreme Bares & Broncs Challenge in April, and this is his second Xtreme Broncs victory of the season.

It was cool, the 24-year-old Newman added. Taking part in these rodeos and bronco battles in the Big Sky area has been great. This win felt fantastic.

With a run of 85.5 points in the long round, Newman reached the final. Initially, he competed against Burch Rodeo’s Lunatic From Hell, the 2018 PRCA Saddle Bronc Riding Horse of the Year. It was his third meeting for him and he emerged victorious with a trip of 91 points.

I’ve paired up with him several times, and I think you could call him my old friend, he added. We hit it off well. I was glad to have him as it was one of the most enjoyable days I’ve ever had with him.

Newman’s outstanding season continues with this win. He now ranks first in the PRCA | RAM World Standings, having earned nearly $120,000 so far this season. He attributed much of his comeback this year to hard work and having the right people on his side.

I think just putting in the effort has been extremely beneficial for me. He used to be a fairly average bronc rider, and he felt like he spent his time riding the spur board whenever he could.

Then you understand how important fellow riders are to this activity. That’s what can make or break a man’s career. Kolby Wanchuk, Chase Brooks, and Tanner Butner make a fantastic traveling group for me. They are all fantastic cyclists with great attitudes. That’s exactly what you’re looking for.

With just four months remaining in the regular season, Newman is on the verge of securing back-to-back appearances at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. While that is on his mind, he stated that he only cares about having fun and doing his job every night.

Newman added: I feel wonderful and I’m as healthy as I can be. I’m just going to have a good time doing my job and sticking to the fundamentals. It’s not a difficult task. All you have to do now is put your feet up, pick up the reins, and as I said earlier, have fun out there.

Wade Sundell, a veteran saddle bronc rider, was second with an 87.5-point performance, while Brooks and Kade Bruno tied for third with 85 points.
